Barnet Council last night [17 March] approved a Joint Venture to take forward the future development of Brent Cross South, the 180-acre area south of the Brent Cross shopping centre.  The new development will sit alongside Hammerson and Standard Life Investments’ redevelopment of Brent Cross shopping centre, connected via a new pedestrian bridge across the North Circular. 

The council fully accepted the findings and we have been taking urgent action to make improvements so we can provide better support to our children, young people and their families. On Wednesday 15 November the council’s Children, Education, Libraries and Safeguarding Committee (CELS) received an update on the progress of Barnet Children's Services Improvement Action Plan. This action plan sets out what needs to be done, structured around seven improvement themes, and is aimed at ensuring all the necessary improvements happen as quickly as possible.

These pictures demonstrate how much fly tipped waste is left on our streets each day.  Each year the council spends nearly £4million in keeping Barnet’s streets clean. That includes collecting 1,600 tonnes of fly tipped waste; equivalent to 200 double decker buses in weight. In the last week alone, the council has collected almost 10 tonnes of fly tipped materials. Collecting and disposing of this fly tipped waste cost the council in excess of £1/2 million last year.

Hope Corner, a building delivered by Countryside and L&Q in partnership with the Council, replaces the former Valley Centre on Dollis Valley Estate, and was formally opened Saturday 17 September. The regeneration of the Dollis Valley estate aims to create a new integrated community by replacing the existing system built multi-storey homes on the estate with new mixed tenure housing development of 631 homes.

A Barnet Council spokesperson said: “We appreciate the concerns raised, however, we want to reassure residents that breastfeeding support services will continue to be provided to mothers in Barnet after the contract with Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust comes to an end in April, and will complement the wider range of support on offer for children and families.

The annual awareness campaign, which runs from 14 May to 27 May, aims to shine a spotlight on the difference foster carers make to the lives of thousands of children, and draw attention to the need for more foster carers nationwide. There are close to 64,000 children living in foster families across the UK. In Barnet, there are 115 foster carers who care for around 115 children and young people.

From 6 February 2017, residents can visit the new site to officially record births, death, marriages and civil partnerships within the borough. All births in England and Wales must be registered within 42 days of the child being born – for babies born in Barnet, either at home or at Barnet General Hospital, parents can now use Hendon Town Hall if they wish to. Couples will also now be able to use the iconic Grade II listed building to get married in, with various rooms of different capacities that are suitable to use as wedding venues available for hire.

  The first of the new 16 parking payment terminals are currently being installed and more will follow in February in the local town centres. To pay for parking, motorists insert their credit or debit card and choose the amount needed, based on how long they want to stay. Councillor Dean Cohen, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to supporting local businesses and the public on our high streets, offering them further choice for easier parking. 

The Council’s Housing Committee on Monday, 26 June will consider proposals to invest in measures to ensure that all of the borough’s 24 high-rise tower blocks meet best practice, including consideration of sprinkler systems, improved fire and smoke alarm systems and other measures.

Residents are being invited to give their views on proposals which will see a new Thameslink station in Brent Cross delivered nine years earlier than originally planned. The additional train station, set to be delivered by Barnet Council in partnership with Network Rail and supported by Re, will link the new £4.5bn Brent Cross Cricklewood development scheme to King’s Cross St Pancras in less than 15 minutes.
