Advice on staying safe during the heatwave

This week the temperature is expected to rise further to potentially make it the hottest period of this summer so far. Although most of us welcome the summer sun, high temperatures can be harmful to your health. Try to avoid spending extended periods in the sun this week. In partnership with the E-Car Club, two electric and three hybrid vehicles have been secured as the council aims to lead by example by taking further steps to improve Barnet’s air quality.   The vehicles will be available for business use, enabling staff to travel across the borough to deliver council services. Residents will also be able to hire the vehicles with one available 24 hours a day and two vehicles available outside of business hours (6.30pm – 8.30am Monday to Friday and any time over the weekend).  

Healthier eating, healthier Barnet

With 75 per cent of UK residents eating out at least once a week, Barnet Council, working together with its partners in Public Health department, has created an initiative to properly recognise and applaud the healthy changes being made by retailers. On Tuesday 13 September, Barnet Council recognised six of these businesses by awarding them with Healthier Catering Commitment certificates at a special presentation in its offices at North London Business Park.

The celebration hosted by Barnet Council’s Public Health Team on Thursday, 28 June saw attendance from members of staff from the pilot schools, representatives from across the council including the authority’s Child’s Rights Lead; responsible for coordinating the council’s work towards becoming a Unicef Child Friendly Community.

Barnet Council is introducing a new scheme designed to benefit local charities and volunteering organisations for years to come.  Similar to many schemes which exist for central Government departments, the ‘Ready 2 Volunteer’ scheme allows over 1,800 council staff the flexibility to volunteer in the community, in priority areas such as adult social care or supporting the homeless. 

Armed Forces Day parade 2018

The parade which began at St Joseph’s School and ended at Hendon Town Hall on Sunday 1st July, honoured the bravery and commitment of servicemen and women, past and present. Among the 150 troops on parade were Army Reserves from B Coy 4 Princess of Wales’ Royal Regiment based in Edgware, 240 Transport Squadron Royal Logistics Corps and 169 Field Company Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers based in High Barnet. Cadet units were also represented from the Sea, Army and Air Cadets.

On 16 February Barnet officially launched ‘Live Unlimited’, a registered charity based on the vision of providing all looked after children and care leavers with the opportunities, support and inspiration to fulfil their potential and follow their dreams. As part of the charity, Barnet has established the ‘Imagination Trust’.

Burnt Oak Looking Forward

The council identified a need to invest in the town centre, implementing the Burnt Oak Town Centre project in mid-2015. This included putting significant funding towards the development of a strategy for the town centre and the delivery of public realm improvements to make Burnt Oak a more attractive town centre for shoppers and traders. These changes support Burnt Oak to become a thriving town centre, serving residents with a range of local amenities and affordable retail facilities for businesses.

Commonwealth Day marked by Barnet Council

This morning (13 March) the Mayor raised a Commonwealth flag above Hendon Town Hall – Mayors, local authorities, pupils and students, Ex-Servicemen and many others around the world also raised more than 950 Commonwealth flags at 10am. Commonwealth Day promotes international co-operation and an understanding of global issues, whilst also promoting the work of Commonwealth organisations. Prior to raising the flag, the Mayor read a specially written ‘Commonwealth Affirmation’.

The Barnet Group is parent company to Barnet Homes, a social housing organisation, and Your Choice Barnet, a social care organisation for adults with learning and physical disabilities. It pledged the financial support following the successful launch of Live Unlimited in February. Live Unlimited is a registered charity set up by Barnet Council based on the vision of providing equal opportunities, support and inspiration to all of Barnet’s 334 looked after children and 221 care leavers.
