More than 80 Barnet schools have recently been awarded their TfL Travel for Life accreditation by Transport for London (TfL). TfL Travel for Life (formally STARS) is TfL's accreditation scheme for London schools and nurseries. TfL Travel for Life inspires young Londoners to travel to school sustainably, actively, responsibly, and safely by championing walking, scooting and cycling.

Barnet Council, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Police, is launching a groundbreaking partnership during Restorative Justice Week 2023 (19-25 November). This will promote restorative justice (RJ) initiatives within the borough, creating a platform for dialogue and healing among those impacted by crime.  The collaboration will provide a blueprint for improvements in RJ provision across the Met and Barnet.

Barnet Council is set to support the United Nations’ 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, running from 25 November to 10 December, with a series of events across the borough. These events, developed in collaboration with various partners, will engage residents in advocating for change and spearheading initiatives to combat violence against women and girls.

Barnet Council and Related Argent, today (28 November) unveiled a new 250 sq metre architectural frieze by celebrated Barnet-raised artist Giles Round, at the soon-to-open Brent Cross West, London’s newest mainline station. The large-scale work comes just as Barnet launches its bid for Borough of Culture 2027 and is another landmark piece of art in the area that helps promote and celebrate the borough’s cultural identity.

Ahead of COP28, Thursday 30 November to 12 December 2023, Cllr Alan Schneiderman Barnet Cabinet member for the Environment and Climate Change, has taken some time to reflect on the changes that the council has made and the challenges to come. Cllr Schneiderman said:

Barnet Council is to lead on renewable power across the London boroughs, aiming to secure 100% renewable energy for the public sector. The ‘Renewable Power for London’ theme forms part of London Councils’ Climate Programme, established to support collaborative delivery of climate solutions across the capital.

Barnet Council has announced its temporary service changes for the festive season, including Christmas week and New Year. Bin collection days and opening hours for libraries and leisure centres are set to change, while shoppers can benefit from half-price parking.

A charity that cares for seriously ill children has been awarded £14,000 thanks to an innovative recycling scheme joined by Barnet Council. Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice in High Barnet, which helps children with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions, will benefit from the initiative to recycle scrap metal recovered from Hendon Cemetery and Crematorium.

Eager passengers braved a chilly December morning today to be the first to arrive at Brent Cross West, the first new mainline station to be built in London in over a decade. The impressive new Thameslink station in North London can be found between Cricklewood and Hendon stations on the Midland Main Line and is the gateway to new neighbourhood Brent Cross Town.

Members of the Jewish faith and other communities came together on Tuesday evening to attend the annual lighting of the menorah outside Hendon Town Hall. The ceremony is a celebration of Chanukah, the eight-day Jewish Festival of Lights. Barnet Council joined in the celebrations, as it does every year, with a 12-ft menorah placed outside the town hall.
