Flooding can occur with little or no warning. You can suffer its devastating effects very quickly.

It may be possible to restrict moderate water access. But, be aware you may not be able to prevent damage from a heavy flood.

All homeowners should be aware if they live in a flood plain. Flooding is thirty times more costly than burglary.

What to do to prevent damage

Homeowners can make upgrades to their property to reduce the amount of water that gets in. These may come at a cost, but are cheaper than the cost of damages, disruption and increased insurance.

You can:

  • fit air brick covers to cover ventilation bricks
  • move home entertainment systems, electrical sockets and appliances off the ground
  • avoid using tarmac or concrete when creating a new driveway. This stops rain water draining into the ground and forces it into the drains
  • fit boards at your front door which can prevent water entering your property
  • install solid or tiled floor. If you are the victim of flood damage, you will have to replace carpets and wooden flooring
  • buy some sandbags or fill some up yourself

Stay safe

During a flood, the Environment Agency advises you to:

  • gather essential items together either upstairs or in a high place
  • keep children, vulnerable people and pets out of floodwater
  • turn off gas, electricity and water supplies if flood water enters your home
  • try to prevent flood water from entering your home
  • stay calm and reassure those around you. Call 999 if you are in danger
  • make sure you have everything you need with you during a flood to keep you warm, hydrated, and nourished

The dangers of floodwater

  • avoid driving and walking through it where possible. Especially if it is flowing water, or if you can't see how deep it is
  • floodwater can lift manhole covers. Only travel through floodwater as a last resort
  • wash your hands thoroughly if you touch floodwater as it may be contaminated
  • only move your vehicle if it’s safe to do so
  • 6 inches of fast-flowing water can knock over an adult and 2 feet of water can move a car
