New data published by the Department for Education (DfE) has revealed that in Barnet 97.90% of Education, Health and Care Plans (excluding exceptions)  are issued within the statutory timescale of 20 weeks. In fact, completion rates in Barnet have not dipped below 97% since 2017. Commenting on the news, Cllr Pauline Coakley Webb, Cabinet Member for Family Friendly Barnet, said:

“Today is the 75th anniversary of the HMT Empire Windrush docking at the Port of Tilbury at the invitation of the British government. The ship brought 492 passengers to the UK from a number of Caribbean islands including Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. They were invited because we needed people to help us get back onto our feet after the Second World War.

The event was attended by The Worshipful Mayor of Barnet, Cllr Nagus Narenthira, the Representative Deputy Lieutenant, Martin Russell, and other dignitaries and civic guests. The annual ceremony was one of many taking place across the country to recognise those currently serving and those who have served.

Barnet Council’s Cabinet Members have voted unanimously to acquire 249 new build homes from developer Redrow to be made available for affordable rent to the borough’s residents.

The event in partnership with Persian Advice Bureau and New Citizens Gateway, was part of the council’s commitment to make Barnet a borough of sanctuary, and an opportunity to celebrate the contribution of refugees in Barnet. The day included live performances, networking, physical activity, guest speakers and information stalls run by the NHS and the police.

Urban regeneration, cost of living support, town centre parking, and crime and anti-social behaviour were among the questions put to council Leader Barry Rawlings and his Cabinet members in Barnet’s first live online Q&A with the borough’s political leaders.

These recommendations, developed through a deliberative process with a representative group of residents from across the borough, provide valuable insights and actions for achieving a sustainable and net zero future here in Barnet.

She said: “The 75th anniversary of the NHS is a great opportunity to reflect on the incredible work of all clinical and non-clinical staff that work passionately and with a commitment to save lives and keep people healthy and well as long as possible.

Cllr Dan Thomas, Leader of the Barnet Conservative Group, has led tributes to the former Leader of the Council and Mayor of Barnet, Brian Salinger, who passed away yesterday (21 December).  Brian Salinger was first elected a Conservative councillor in 1986, representing Friern Barnet Ward and, after boundary changes, Oakleigh Ward. He retired at the end of his mayoral year 2017-2018 as the 53rd Mayor of Barnet.

Barnet will compete against London’s other boroughs for the ‘best float’ competition during the London New Year’s Day Parade (LNYDP) – and you are invited to watch! The theme of this new year’s extravaganza is to showcase London’s boroughs to a global audience with an iconic theme past, present or in the future. The theme of Barnet’s float will be BarNET ZERO, reflecting Barnet’s ambition to become net zero as a council by 2030 and as a borough by 2042.
