More people live in Barnet than any other London borough and as the population continues to grow the contract will provide a range of new buildings including schools, leisure centres and community centres to meet the growing demand. The schemes already confirmed include the building of two new leisure centres at Copthall and New Barnet, the Tarling Road Community Centre in East Finchley as well as school expansion projects.

Grahame Park completes recycling loop

Every item in The Loop has been lovingly refurbished or repaired by local people trained by experts from the Repurpose project, a community initiative led by Groundwork London working in partnership with Genesis Housing Association. Since last autumn, residents on the estate have benefitted from a free doorstep collection service for unwanted furniture and electrical items, offered by The Loop.

The free exhibition, which tells the story of the borough’s deep-rooted connection with the RAF, will be open to people from Monday to Friday, between 8am and 9pm. The RAF has a long and distinguished history in Barnet, dating back to the early days of aircraft manufacturing, to the significant role played by RAF Hendon Aerodrome during World War II, where the aerodrome acted as an important centre of aviation.

Mind of My Own smart phone app

The Mind of My Own (MOMO) app can be downloaded by young people currently in care, or leaving care, to help them easily communicate with social care staff and overcome some of the difficulties they may have talking about their lives, concerns and worries. The app can be used by young people to express their views ahead of their review meetings, say where they feel most comfortable meeting or to give staff their general thoughts or request information at any time.

Water outage in Barnet

Water technicians are working to restore service to the EN4 area following outages caused by a faulty valve at Arkley reservoir. UPDATE - 2000, 21 February Affinity Water report that the majority of customers should now have water, however this may be at lower pressure than normal, especially at peak demand periods.

Barnet schools win record numbers of STARS

This is the borough’s most successful year, with 98 schools being awarded 35 Bronze, 22 Silver and 41 Gold awards. The awards recognise Barnet’s schools’ commitment to promoting safer and more sustainable travel to and from school by encouraging walking, cycling and the use of public transport, rather than cars.

Apprentices celebrated across Barnet

Next week is National Apprenticeship Week 2017, co-ordinated by the National Apprenticeship Service nationwide. This annual event is designed to celebrate apprenticeships and traineeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy. This year, Barnet Council and its partners have pledged to provide 82 apprenticeship opportunities in a variety of areas including business administration, social care, parks, passenger transport, waste and recycling, plumbing, electricity fitting and dry lining.

Homesharing scheme provides care and housing

The scheme, run by the charity Novus - Homeshare, matches people who want live-in help or support around the house with people who need accommodation and are willing to offer assistance. Householders with a spare room receive 40 hours of help per month for tasks such as cooking, laundry, gardening, shopping and companionship.

Barnet Council honours Sir Nicholas Winton

The Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Brian Salinger, and Councillor Dean Cohen, took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony today (Tuesday, 13 March 2018) to open a memorial garden for Sir Nicholas Winton at Princes Park, Golders Green. Sir Nicholas Winton was a British humanitarian, who organised the evacuation of 669 children prior to the start of the Second World War. Most of the children were Jewish, and from Czechoslovakia, with the evacuation taking place on the eve of the Second World War.

7 Civic Award framed vellums were given for Lifetime Achievement and Outstanding Service to the Community. 15 other nominees were presented with a certificate scroll in recognition of their achievements. The Worshipful the Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Brian Salinger said: “These awards celebrate the hard work and contribution these individuals have made to their community in Barnet. It is enriching to live in a borough which contains such selfless and motivated individuals who work endlessly to make Barnet a better place for others.”
