Approaches have included advising someone how to pay for their parking ticket via a machine to prevent it escalating in price quickly, to advising them on how to pay as the machine was ‘playing up’ for him.  In doing so he has observed the victim when entering their PIN number and then distracted them, taking their card as it is returned from the machine and stating that it must have been swallowed.

Members of the council’s licensing sub-committee considered evidence from police and the council’s trading standards team before determining an outcome for the ‘Crazy Corner Shop’, in High Road, East Finchley. At a hearing on 30 August, committee members heard that the shop had been the subject of three separate test purchasing operations organised by police and trading standards officers, in response to information provided by the public. Each time, it had failed.

M Dream Property, of 29 Finchley Lane, was prosecuted after complaints about noise, overcrowding and anti-social behaviour at the property on the A41, Watford Way, Hendon. Legal action was launched against the firm by the Environmental Health team at Re, the joint venture between Capita and Barnet Council.

The programme – thought to be the largest of its kind in London – will reduce the risk of flooding, provide protection from the sun during heatwaves and help to improve air quality. Trees will be planted at a rate of 900 per year under the scheme. They will absorb rainwater that would otherwise end up in London’s sewers.

The visit, which took place at the end of July and beginning of August, was the fourth to be carried out by Ofsted since Barnet’s Children’s Services were judged to be inadequate in July last year. During the visit, inspectors reviewed the progress made for children looked after across the Children in care and Intervention and planning teams. In their conclusions published this week, Ofsted found that the local authority has maintained a consistent and strong focus on improving services and the quality of social work practice.

Furniture shop Crazy Discounts – which is based in 17 Woodhouse Road – pleaded guilty to five offences of flytipping in nearby Lambert Way, Finchley, at Willesden Magistrates Court today (Tuesday 4 September). The firm was ordered to pay a £5,000 fine, £2,514 in costs, £2,000 in compensation and a £100 victim surcharge. Workers from the store were caught flytipping with two Ford Transit vans when the council used CCTV to monitor Lambert Way after multiple reports of flytipping there. One of the vans was branded with the Crazy Discounts logo.

The Leader of Barnet Council, Councillor Richard Cornelius, said: “I’m pleased to report that we have started this week on a positive note, building on the progress that we started to see last week. “The vast majority of collections were completed to schedule yesterday and we are carrying out collections scheduled for today. We expect to complete these by the end of today. “We will continue to build on this progress this week by doing our utmost to collect residents’ recycling and waste on the allocated days. We have brought in additional staff to help us do this.”

Since it joined forces with PA, the global innovation and transformation consultancy, the council has been able to supply Argenti care technology to more than 3,700 vulnerable adults in the borough. The technology – sometimes called Telecare – is the use of sensors, mobile devices, alarms on a person or in their home to keep someone safe and independent for longer. The sensors can detect falls, gas leaks, flooding from overrunning baths and sinks, reminders to take medication, and alerts if a front door has been left open.

Barnet Council will set aside an additional £21.9million for fire safety improvements across the borough, bringing the total investment to £51.9m, under a proposal to be considered by its Housing Committee tonight (Monday 14 January).
