Exhibition highlights WW1 sacrifices

Last updated: 24 January, 2019

The display in the atrium of the Town Hall offers a fascinating insight into the men who lost their lives in the Great War and the local area’s historical connection to the conflict. One of the exhibits on show highlights the names of 1,500 local servicemen who fell, listing them by the areas and streets of the borough in which they lived. ‘The Men that Marched Away’ is the culmination of three years of research by Local Studies Centre volunteers who pieced together obituaries from the three local newspapers which were in existence at the time.

Views sought on Council Tax Support scheme

Council Tax Support is the council’s discount scheme that helps people on low-incomes pay their Council Tax. Barnet Council is considering moving to a new, simplified scheme for working age claimants and would like to hear all residents’ views. Pension age claimants will be unaffected by the changes to the scheme. Between 2019 and 2024, the council faces a budget gap of £69 million. This means the council will need to change the way it operates to enable it deliver within its means.

Barnet schools lead the way

Last updated: 24 January, 2019

Provisional results released by the Department for Education last week, show Barnet was ranked second highest in the country based on Progress 8 scores which gauge the progress made by each student during their time at secondary school. Barnet was behind The Isles of Scilly which had only 14 students sitting exams this year. The average Attainment 8 score, which is a way of measuring pupils across eight qualifications including Maths and English, saw the authority ranked fifth highest nationally. This year also saw students perform extremely well in other exams.

The current rounds are up to 15 years old, so they do not reflect changes in Barnet over recent years. Changing them and making them more efficient means we can plan to collect almost all of our bins during the week, eliminating the need for garden bins to be collected on a Saturday. The recycling and refuse collections will remain weekly and the garden waste collections fortnightly.
