The council employs 80 apprentices in its schools, social care services, gardening and grounds work teams, street cleaning and rubbish collection departments, and back office roles. Mr Hooton made the comments during National Apprenticeship Week, an annual campaign to highlight the value that apprentices add to the UK workforce.

Shared Lives to help hundreds of adults

The council has joined the UK-wide network Shared Lives Plus, which matches approved carers with people who need support for their social care or health. People can visit their Shared Lives carer for a few hours during the day, an overnight stay or even move in and become part of the family for many years.

Council hosts photography exhibition

The exhibition – which will be with us until Monday 17 February – is a photographic competition that took place last year with our twin town of Le Raincy in France.

The Local Plan sets out how the borough is going to grow in the years to 2036, with new homes including affordable housing, and new spaces for business, sport and recreation.

Launch of new garden waste service

Councillor Dean Cohen, Chair of the Barnet Council Environment Committee, said: “A charge for garden waste collections will help us retain weekly recycling and refuse collections, whilst also investing in services such as street cleansing.” Residents will shortly receive a leaflet explaining how to sign up and pay for their yearly subscription for the garden waste service, which will be for approximately 23 collections a year. 

Landowner fined for failing to clear fly-tip

Milegate Limited, and one of its company directors, were fined and ordered to pay costs totalling almost £8,000 at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on 11 February 2020 after ignoring an ‘Untidy Land Notice’ issued by the council’s Planning Enforcement Team requiring that the land behind the former Railway Hotel public house be cleared.
