Barnet Council to support strong volunteer network with first ever Volunteering Strategy

Barnet councillors have unanimously approved the council’s first ever dedicated Volunteering Strategy (2023-26) *. The strategy sets out proposals for supporting the thousands of volunteers across the borough, while developing volunteering in Barnet over the next three years.

Barnet Council announces today that the borough’s first LGBTQ+ celebration Pride in the Park will launch later this year. The event at Victoria Park, Finchley, will be held on Sunday 20 August and is being coordinated by a partnership led by Barnet’s LGBTQ+ community group Inkluder CiC. The news comes as the council raises the Rainbow flag above Hendon Town Hall today to mark the start of LGBTQ+ Pride Month.

New data published by the Department for Education (DfE) has revealed that in Barnet 97.90% of Education, Health and Care Plans (excluding exceptions) are issued within the statutory timescale of 20 weeks. “Today is the 75th anniversary of the HMT Empire Windrush docking at the Port of Tilbury at the invitation of the British government. The ship brought 492 passengers to the UK from a number of Caribbean islands including Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. They were invited because we needed people to help us get back onto our feet after the Second World War.

The event in partnership with Persian Advice Bureau and New Citizens Gateway, was part of the council’s commitment to make Barnet a borough of sanctuary, and an opportunity to celebrate the contribution of refugees in Barnet.
