A North London resilience project has unveiled proposals to use nature-based solutions to tackle flood risk around the Silk Stream – a 2.5-mile tributary of the River Brent.

In the build-up to the festive season Barnet Council is inviting residents to vote for their favourite small businesses in the borough. From beloved local cafés and shops, to trades like builders who have gone the extra mile, residents can vote to celebrate those small businesses that are at the heart of our communities. Barnet is home to around 29,000 businesses, the majority of which are micro-businesses operating with a few employees. The council has launched the competition to support local enterprise and encourage more people to shop and spend locally.

Barnet Council has been awarded £1.6 million of government funding to support two affordable housing schemes, which are being delivered by Barnet Homes. Barnet is one of 41 local authorities to receive part of a £35 million fund from The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, and has received the second highest allocated funding in London.

The count for the Barnet local elections took place overnight at Saracens’ StoneX stadium, finishing this morning at 7.00am (Friday 6 May). Following the overnight count, the results have been declared and the Barnet Labour group now has full control of the council. Labour 41 seats and Conservatives 22 seats. The provisional voter turnout was 97,480 (37.9%).

It’s Mental Health Awareness Week (9-13 May) and this year’s theme is all about helping others out of loneliness. We encourage you to support others who might be feeling lonely.

Barnet Labour group now has majority control of the council following local elections on Thursday 5 May.  Labour won 41 seats and Conservatives took 22 seats with the provisional voter turnout being 97,480 (37.9%). 

Update on roadworks at Apex Corner

Following further work between Barnet Council Officers and Transport for London the roadworks of the current phase have been reduced: A Barnet Council spokesperson said: "TfL has committed to reducing the duration of the current phase of work on the A41 by one week, it is now scheduled to be completed by 10 June. As of 10 June the next phases should be less disruptive and should reduce current congestion." Information correct as of 11.50 Friday 27 May 2022  

Throughout May, Barnet Council will not cut grass in many of the borough’s parks, greenspaces and roadside verges. In total, 26 parks and green spaces will be left uncut for a month. Barnet Council's new administration want to work with residents to identify more spaces which can be permanently rewilded. According to Plantlife, organisers of No Mow May, a three-acre meadow can be home to nine million flowers producing enough nectar to support ½ million bees every day.
