Get ready to vote on Thursday 2 May elections

The Mayor of London and London Assembly elections are taking place on Thursday 2 May - less than two weeks away. Make sure you are completely ready to vote by checking that you have a valid form of photo ID and know the location of your local polling station.

Newly published Key Stage 4 (KS4) data from the Department for Education (DfE), shows that Barnet is second in the country for Progress 8, which measures the progress that students have made between the end of primary school and the end of Key Stage 4 (16 year olds). The Barnet Progress 8 score for the 28 schools in the Borough was only beaten by the Isles of Scilly Local Authority, which has only one school in it. 

Barnet celebrates Diwali

The sights, sounds and flavours of Diwali lit up the Quadrangle at Middlesex University at the council’s official celebration event yesterday evening (8 November). The event was organised by Barnet Council in partnership with Middlesex University and Barnet Asian Women’s Association (BAWA).

As the conflict in the Middle East continues, we are very aware of how these events continue to affect our communities here in Barnet. Given the strength of feeling it is no surprise that groups and individuals want to make their voices heard through protest, which is their legal right.

Barnet residents came together to pay their respects to those who have died in conflicts around the world on Remembrance Sunday (12 November).

General Election 2024 results  The count for the Parliamentary constituencies of Chipping Barnet, Finchley & Golders Green and Hendon in the 2024 General Election took place at the RAF Museum, Colindale, on Thursday 4 July and the following results have been declared:   Dan Tomlinson of the Labour Party has been elected as the Member of Parliament for the Chipping Barnet constituency.  Sarah Sackman of the Labour Party has been elected as the Member of Parliament for the Finchley & Golders Green constituency. 

There is a national approach to improving fire safety in high-rise blocks of flats; now it is time to do the same for low-rise housing, writes Cath Shaw, Acting Chief Executive of Barnet Council.

Creative and cultural activities will be piloted at two Barnet libraries to improve the quality of life and wellbeing of residents who are lonely, socially isolated or living with dementia. Barnet Council has been awarded £29,910 by Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grants to help deliver the activities at Colindale and Chipping Barnet libraries.

Four Barnet councillors have been given long service awards after notching up more than 100 years of service between them. The accolades were given to Eva Greenspan (Conservatives), Kath McGuirk (Labour), Gill Sargeant (Labour) and Geof Cooke (Labour) at a meeting of Barnet’s Full Council yesterday evening (Tuesday 9 July).

Barnet Council is asking residents for their ideas and suggestions about improved ways to help people walk, cycle and wheel more easily around Colindale. An online questionnaire, which launches today, alongside community drop-by and briefing sessions aim to understand what local people think about the proposals.
